Fashion designers need to be artistic, creative and must posses ability to translate ideas in sketches, must have keen sense of colour i.e. combination of shades and tones, visual imagination & knowledge of market trends. A fashion designer is also known as a clothes designer or an apparel designer. They develop new styles and products for clothing apparel and accessories by creating original designs or by adapting fashions to suit local conditions, trends and buyers.

Fashion Designers showThey are the ones who approve final samples before they go into production. They analyze the fashion trends and work closely with production, sales and marketing departments to design, produce and promote a finished, ready-to-wear, salable product for apparel manufacturers, specialty and retail stores, and at times, individual clients. The designer begins the designing process only after thorough market research, i.e., understanding the needs of the client/market in terms of changing trends, budget etc. Accessory Designers specialize in designing shoes, bags, scarves, jewellery and ties, which complete the look of the garment.

Fashion designers usually specialize in a specific line of clothing such as sportswear, men, women, kids, maternity, bridal, lingerie and so on. A designer has to start his career from scratch by developing a unique concept and translating this into garment collections, other lifestyle related products or a statement in various other types of media. These designers approach clothing, fashion and lifestyle from new angles and explore the boundaries of fashion itself in order to create new concepts and views for fashion design. Such new facets are conceptualized in the fashion designing schools. Fashion design courses are considered applied arts just like graphic design and interior design.

Fashion designers are inspired from a wide range of cultural influences. They also tend to keep an eye on things going on around the world to inspire themselves to make their future clotheslines. Most fashion designers, besides being trained in design, are also trained as pattern makers and modelers.

Reasons to join Fashion Designing Schools

As the fashion, industry in India becomes more and more sophisticated, creating and promoting a line of clothing takes more than just the ability to sew and draw pictures. The mission of the fashion design courses in India is to provide academic and specialized practical instruction onto higher education and prepare students for entry-level positions in fashion industry. The study of fashion design involves hands-on training, thus one can prepare him by developing many skills by interacting with instructors and professors teaching them the same. As a fashion design student, one has the time and opportunity to perfect the craft without the pressures of clients and their career.

There are a number of recently-introduced courses like merchandise management that grounds prospective managers in fashion concepts, highlights of the fashion business, principles of merchandising, planning and control, selection of resources and sales promotion, etc. Computer Aided Design courses are a must for designers if they want to keep up with technology. A course in banking and exports teaches students the strategies, procedures and financial implications in developing, operating and controlling a business.

The courses encourage the development of students` individual design identity through the translation of their personal research into design. These programmes are designed to offer students with an understanding of design skill needed in today`s fashion design industry. To stay at the cutting-edge, students need innovation design skills, familiarity with the global fashion and design scene-plus your own brand of creativity. The courses combine practical workshops with intellectual studies in design, culture and technology.

The courses and class projects give an opportunity to the budding designers to build out a diverse portfolio of their student work, making their skills more marketable. Subjects are taught by practicing fashion professionals; the topics students study are also up to date and relevant to the fashion and design industry. Design school can afford to provide fashion students the opportunity to experiment and feed off of the energy and innovation of other students. This gives them proper experience and this experience can only make a designers` own design work better.

By the end of the courses, students create their own mini-collections. The graduates then present these collections as a grand finale at the Graduation Show, where fashion press, buyers and the public view their talents for the first time. Lastly, the most important reason for a designer to go to fashion school is their degree! All employers want designers who have a recognized fashion designing degree apart from a commitment to work hard and achieve success.

Once a student has completed his/her internship, a designer label, a boutique, a local garment company or an export firm absorbs him. Fresh graduates start as trainees on a stipend of Rs 3,500 per month and with experience can escalate to Rs 20,000 within a span of eight to ten years, or even earlier depending on individual potential and the size of the company. After gaining experience and a name, one can branch out on his/her own with his/her own label and start supplying to various boutiques, showrooms and stores. A fashion designer requires to be well versed in all aspects of fashion from pattern making, quality control, knowledge of textiles, dyes, accessory design, illustration, co-ordination, merchandising, accounts, etc.
