Lakme Fashion Week 2005The Lakme Fashion Week 2005 was India`s largest buyer-to-buyer fashion event. This biggest fashion extravaganza of the country was held at Delhi from 20th April to 26th April at The Grand, New Delhi with 61 designers, up from 57 of them last year in 2004. Out of the designers 55 of them showcased their designs on the ramp, whereas only 6 opted for the stalls. The participating designers showcased their Pret (ready-to-wear) and Diffusion (a line between ready-to-wear and couture) lines in Indian, Indo-Western and Western categories.

There was a presence of 39 fashion shows, up from 35 shows held last year. The primary objective of the event was to create business relationships and facilitate a dialogue between designers, trade buyers and media. The seven-day event also included 39 shows, 70 exhibition stalls, and an interactive panel discussion.

Nearly 60 international buyers from 12 countries, including UK, US, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the Middle East, and about 90 domestic buyers also participated in the event. Amongst the big international buyers who participated in the fashion week were Selfridges, Harrods, Okra and RCKC. Prominent domestic buyers included Ogaan; Shoppers Stop, Be, Elan Couture.

With LIFW 2005, FDCI carried forward its vision of using LIFW as a platform for the overall development of the fashion design industry. Since the inception of LIFW in 2000, FDCI has consistently broadened the scope of the event to expand the involvement of key stakeholders of the fashion design industry. Over the years, FDCI has used LIFW to effectively promote the concept of designer prêt labels amongst retailers, merchandisers, corporates and the general public, in order to achieve its final objective of promoting `Affordable Fashion`.

Lakme India Fashion Week has risen in stature tremendously during the last few years. During these six years, the FDCI has produced events that are on par with Fashion Weeks around the globe - an event of which India can be proud. In this endeavour, the event has always been generously supported not only by all designers, the Indian fashion design industry and media, but also by the sponsors and the global fashion network.

LIFW has played a key role in popularizing the concept of designer prêt and in the corporatisation of the fashion design industry in India, which is the way forward to take this industry to the next level. Participation from major international buyers like Saks and Browns for the first time at LIFW 2004 was indicative of a bright future for the fashion design industry in India.
